When you look at what the other candidates are saying they will do, it's all very similar and very vague. What's missing is an
inclination of how they will do it. Here's a basic outline of what we need to consider doing to shape our communities to fit our needs. Here's why I believe I can do this job.
1. Transport Like most rural areas in the UK, this has been on everybody's list for years. And it's still not fixed. Public transport solutions have come and gone, no doubt due to lack of profit for the providers. We need to look harder at what our communities really need and when we need it. This information should then be compiled into a proposal to convince the public transport organisations that the routes are viable and sustainable. Then we need to use it or loose it! Alongside this we need to look at alternative community supported services like the Lerryn Bus to cover more specific local needs like getting our youth from more isolated areas, such as Polruan, to and from places of recreation, sports and other activities. Again this needs to be sustainable and will need a focused strategy and schedule.
2. Affordable Housing A growing problem, with consequences spreading right through our communities. No affordable house, No local job, Move away, Take children, Threaten school's survival. A vicious connection. There needs to be clearer communication on the area's affordable demand. From this information we can create localised tactics to take advantage of the many affordable packages available. We then need to be smarter and more flexible at how we source potential development sites, both boundary and infill. We need to look at empty properties and we also need to ensure that houses and residents are well managed. Another avenue to consider is networking with towns and villages throughout the UK to share their ideas and solutions.
3. Facilities for Youth Another national challenge for rural areas. We are so fortunate to live in an area that offers such a fantastic environment in which to grow up. The unbeatable countryside and estuary with the coast just round the corner. Youth organisations are well set up and run by volunteers right across the area but just as with the rest of the country, the transition from childhood into youth can be challenging. As mentioned earlier, transport solutions will help. However our disaffected youth will not flourish with an additional bus. We need to work together to discover what we believe is missing. Most importantly we need to ask our youth what they believe is missing then work together to go get it.
